Sébastien and I are still buzzing when we get back to the hotel. Today was a good day. Sébastien and Margot got on beautifully, and I’m glad their relationship has a chance to recover after being so brutally severed. I’m under no illusions it’ll always be this smooth. There’s a lot to unpack, but Margot seems lovely and willing to put in the work, while Sébastien has also come out of his shell a bit.

He deserves it.

“Could you really leave Paris?” Gaspar asks as we gather in the lobby.

“That’s a bridge I’ll cross much later. Provence has made a few arguments, though.” I see why Zola kept returning here, never quite forgetting the beauty of the countryside. “I love it here.”

Gaspar snorts. “Yeah, a well-paid internship in your dream field can do that.”

I laugh and loop my arm around his. “That’s definitely an argument. Will you come with me?”

“As long as I’m not the little project.”

“Never.” I meant what I said in Margot’s lab. It doesn’t matter to me which form Gaspar takes. I loved him as a ghost, and I love him in this form. He’s my hedgehog boy, and that’s all I need to know. “Let’s get changed and find something to eat. Gaby wants to go back to Marseille. She’s found a cute little nightclub she can’t wait to try tonight.”

Gaspar holds up his hand. “Say no more. You know I’m always good for a party.”

“Are you coming, too?” I ask Sébastien.

There’s no answer. Instead, his gaze is fixed on the entrance. A sleek black car pulls away from the kerb after dropping off its passenger. The doors open, revealing a tall man in a suit.

The monster himself.
